** In 1938, due to the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese war Tokyo was stripped of its host status for the Games by the IOC. In July 1938 the government of Japan abandoned its support for the 1940 Games and Helsinki, Finland being the runner-up in the original bidding was awarded the games by the IOC.

*** Owing to Australian quarantine laws, 6 equestrian events were held in Stockholm several months before the rest of the 1956 Games in Melbourne, 5 nations from 72 competed in the equestrian events in Stockholm, but did not attend the Games in Melbourne.

**** The 2020 Summer Olympics were originally scheduled for the 24th of July to the 9th of August 2020, but were rescheduled to 2021 by 12 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the event is still referred to as the 2020 Summer Olympics to preserve the 4-year Olympiad cycle.
